Five of my favorite words

In case you didn’t know: I’m a sucker for interesting, unique words.

That’s just as weird as it sounds.

I love it when people use unique, beautiful language in their day-to-day life. I feel like it enriches a conversation and the (English) language as a whole. I choose my favorites carefully, and have a pretty long list of words on my phone that I’ve heard somewhere and stuck with me.

(Oh, don’t mind me, I’m just Googling the unique word you just used to describe your shoelaces. I’m sorry, it’s one of my things.)

Here are five of my all time favorites:

  1. Mellifluous. Adjective. (Of a sound) pleasingly smooth and musical to hear.
  2. Limerence. Noun. The state of being infatuated with another person.
  3. Luminescence. Noun. Light produced by chemical, electrical, or psychological means.
  4.  Evanescent. Adjective. soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing.
  5. imbroglio. Noun. an extremely confused, complicated, or embarrassing situation.

I can’t help but wonder.. What are your favorite words?
