Why I love my new short hair (and how you can learn to love yours!)

Long hair is like a crown. It’s beautiful and feminine. You can curl it, straighten it, braid it. Throw it in a messy bun or a ponytail and it still looks good. But long hair also means struggling with knots in the morning,  fighting split ends with expensive hair masks and having a sweaty neck in the summer. I recently decided to chop off my bra strap length locks into a bob. Here’s why that’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

  1. It’s super low maintenance. At least for me. It dries much more predictably, and if I do feel like using a blow drier it only take me 15 minutes to dry all of my hair. I have very thick hair, so when it was long it could take up to an hour to dry it all. Air drying was even more horrible, on cold or humid days it would stay wet 9+ hours.
  2. I feel more confident. I liked hiding behind my long hair, it felt like I wasn’t as visible and I could easily blend in with everyone else. Now that it’s shorter, I feel more exposed but surprisingly I like it better. Long hair is like a safe blanket while short hair forces you to stand up straighter and look everyone in the eyes.
  3. It’s saves me money. Since I chopped off most of my hair I only need about 1/3 of the amount of shampoo and conditioner that I used before. As a student I’m always looking for ways to save money so not having to buy tons of shampoo, conditioner, leave-in treatments and hair masks is amazing.
  4. It’s much healthier. No split ends! This might be my favorite thing about having short hair. My and my ends are softer than ever. I sometimes find myself playing with my hair just because it’s so soft and bouncy.

I don’t see myself growing it out anytime soon. Maybe one day I will, but until then I will be doing countless of awesome hair flips.  🙂

  1. Lovely haircut. I had hair down to my middle back before I went on a cutting spree. First cut was about like yours. Then after that grew out for a little bit, I went even shorter. I almost panicked. But, in the long run, my hair is more manageable and easier to maintain. I have a bad habit of growing it back out and then around year three, chopping it all off again.
