It’s All About Finding Balance

Have you ever felt guilty about eating a piece of cake or skipping a workout because you didn’t feel well?

Disordered eating is something that often gets triggered by dieting or over-exercising. You cut out candy and start working out twice a week, and you feel so much better, so you cut out more, and you exercise more as well. But when is it too much? Is it when you get anxious thinking about the lunch you have planned with one of your girlfriends? Or when you feel extremely disappointed in yourself when your workout didn’t go as planned?

Exercise and healthy food are important parts of my life, but it isn’t my whole life. There are times where I feel sluggish during my run, and it takes me a bit longer than planned, and that’s OK. There are times where I’m really craving ice cream, so I eat some. That’s OK as well.

It took me a long time to find that balance, but I can finally say that I did. How about you?

  1. This has always been such a huge struggle for me — I tend to overeat. It’s a regular struggle to remind myself to be mindful about my eating. Luckily I enjoy exercise so that balances out the weight gain, but what I’m doing can’t be healthy! Thanks for the reminder to think about how much I eat 🙂

    • Overeating can be just as destructive as undereating – I’ve struggled with both personally. For me, I noticed that when I was trying to restrict myself and beating myself up over eating something ‘unhealthy’, it would trigger me to overeat. I recommend the book ‘How To Eat Intuitively: A Guide To Mindful Eating’, it truly helped me! 🙂

      • Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll have to check it out. Sometimes, when I find myself overeating, I end up feeling like I’ve already “lost” the battle and end up eating more! I’m much more aware of it now than I was four or ten years ago, so that’s step one 🙂
