All About The ‘Bitch Eating Crackers’ Syndrome And How To Get Over It

Once you hate someone, everything they do is offensive. “Look at this bitch, eating those crackers like she owns the place.”

If you spend (too much) time on the internet, like me, you’ve probably heard the phrase ‘bitch eating crackers’. It’s when you’re annoyed with everything a person does because they’re that person, not because their actual behaviour is annoying.

A while back, I noticed I was becoming one of those people, that was annoyed with everything certain people did. They annoyed me on Facebook. They annoyed me on Instagram. They annoyed me on Twitter. They annoyed me in group chats. Just with their face and their hair and their comments and their everything. Man, was it draining.

So I took a long, hard look at myself. Who was being in the wrong here? It made me unhappy to be so annoyed by others, and in reality they weren’t doing anything wrong at all. Just living their life like everyone else is. So I changed the habit.

Unfollow everyone that annoys you

Did you know that you can unfollow people on Facebook without unfriending them? This made my life SO MUCH BETTER! I have probably unfollowed half of my friend list by now and I’m seeing a lot less memes and annoying status updates. I also ‘mute’ some people on Twitter who tend to post overly negative tweets, because they can personally affect me if I read them too much. It makes me feel like I can breathe.

Don’t engage in arguments on the internet

A while back I made the mistake to argue about abortion on Facebook with a member of my extended family. Within about 45 minutes, 4 people that I don’t know had mixed themselves in the conversation, and it pissed me off. I get that Facebook is a public place and everyone is allowed to comment and voice their opinions, but I really don’t care what 62-year old Betty from St. Joseph Michigan thinks I should do with my reproductive organs.

I stopped responding almost immediately, but in hindsight shouldn’t have engaged in the conversation in the first place. It took me a while to shake it off, and it also kind of ruined my morning. Don’t do it, it’s not worth it.

Doing these two simple things helped me to feel a lot less anxious on social media, and I’m finally letting go of the ‘bitch eating crackers’ syndrome. At first, I felt guilty for unfollowing and muting people, but I realized that I had to do it for my own sanity. And now I enjoy being on the internet again.

  1. Okay maybe I’ve been living under a rock but I’ve never heard of ‘Bitch Eating Crackers’ Syndrome and I am just dying over the definition. I have definitely experienced symptoms of this syndrome before.
